The New Hampstead football team is aiming for a return to the state playoffs in 2025 and will have a new quarterback leading them this season.
Last year, the team was recognized for their rapid scoring ability, largely attributed to the exceptional performance of Rashawn Truell, the quarterback who won the Michael Finoccaro award twice in a row.
With Truell now attending Savannah State, head coach Kyle Hockman’s nephew, Erik Hockman, who is also the twin brother of wide receiver Ben Hockman, is set to step into the quarterback role.
Coach Hockman says Erik has been adapting to his new role fast.
“I sometimes need to give him a nudge,” Hockman stated, “but it isn’t often. He’s managing the team, making checks, calling protections, and adjusting the run game, among many other responsibilities. My role is to enable him to play with speed.”
The Phoneix open the season on the road in Guyton. Their game against South Effingham is Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
