Nick Hankins Jr. discusses Illinois football commitment

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A key element of Bret Bielema’s strategy with the Illini is to recruit from within the state of Illinois, and the commitment of a recent four-star player underscores this approach.

Defensive back Nick Hankins Jr. chose Illinois over 26 other Division I schools and is set to join the program early next winter to prepare for his debut at Memorial Stadium.

“I plan to bring energy and a competitive spirit to the team,” Hankins Jr. said. “[Head coach Bret Bielema] mentioned I could contribute in various roles, such as offense, nickel safety, or cornerback, showcasing my versatility.”

Hankins Jr. emphasized his excitement to get in on the ground floor of what he calls “a school on the come-up,” like Illinois and hopes to be a versatile player for the orange and blue.
