GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — One person was injured in a crash on Asheville Highway in Greeneville on Thursday.

According to South Greene VFD Fire Chief David Weems, crews responded to the 11000 block of Asheville Highway just after 8 p.m.

“When firefighters arrived, they discovered a lone vehicle had plunged into a steep ravine at a sharp curve at the mountain’s base,” Weems stated. “A male individual was found partly outside the driver’s side window.”

Firefighters, rescue squad volunteers and EMS used a pulley system to move the man into the roadway.

He was placed on a stretcher and moved about 50 feet to the roadway, according to Weems.

The man was taken to a landing zone at South Greene High School and transported by medical helicopter to Johnson City Medical Center.

“Luckily, someone saw the accident, as the vehicle was difficult to see from the road, with minimal signs along the roadside indicating a crash had taken place,” Weems explained. “It seems the vehicle was heading north, veered off the road entering the curve, narrowly threaded between a guardrail and embankment, finally stopping at the ravine’s bottom.”

The South Greene VFD, Greeneville Emergency and Rescue Squad, Greene County/Greeneville EMS, Greene County Sheriff’s Department, and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) were the responding agencies to the incident.

News Channel 11 has reached out to THP for more details.
