Two more weeks left at one 'cool' spot in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Sholem Aquatic Center in Champaign has experienced a significant influx of visitors, particularly on days with soaring temperatures. However, this trend is expected to shift shortly, according to pool officials.

The pool will close for the season on Sept. 1.

“We have been very busy since it’s been so hot. Everybody wants to come here and cool off by the pool,” Shaucka Taylor, Sholem’s pool manager, said.

In Central Illinois, pools generally close following Labor Day, and Sholem Aquatic Center is no exception. This means that visitors have just two weeks left to unwind at this favored summer destination.

“I believe we had to turn people away at the peak because we were at capacity which has been pretty intense,” Taylor said.

The high temperatures have drawn more individuals to the pool, increasing the center’s responsibilities. In July, nearly 2,000 people were attending the pool each day.

“The job becomes much more demanding when it’s extremely hot. We are extra vigilant to ensure our lifeguards and patrons remain safe in the heat,” Taylor explained.

Taylor knows this first-hand. She was a lifeguard before becoming a manager.

“It is hard when it’s very hot, and you’re working up in chair for awhile,” Taylor said.

Ben Freburg knows what it’s like to work in the heat and is glad there is a place to go after a long day.

“It’s nice and it’s relaxing. I usually come after work, and I work in a pretty hot environment,” Freburg said.

But Sholem is more than just a place to cool off — it’s a safe space for the community.

“We observe numerous kids visiting with friends to enjoy and relax in the pool. It’s wonderful to provide an environment where children feel secure,” Taylor added.

Since school commenced, Sholem has reduced its operating hours, now opening only on weekends. Despite this change, Taylor mentioned that the pool’s popularity hasn’t waned. Many seek to unwind after a long week at school, making weekends as busy as ever. The pool welcomes visitors from noon to 5 p.m. For further details, check the Champaign Park District’s website.
