STATESBORO, Ga. () — Georgia Southern University (GSU) welcomed nearly 6,000 freshmen onto campus Friday.

“The scary part of it is, I have expectations now,” said freshman Will Seymour. “It’s not high school where you show up and pass.”

Another freshman Lillian Zenchuk said, “it’s stressful but it’s a lot of fun.”

Lillie Dominick said, “It’s so exciting meeting everyone. There’s a lot of emotions.”

This year’s freshman class is so large that they’ve filled up every dorm that the university has to offer in Statesboro.

Upperclassmen were out volunteering some muscle for the move. They said that Operation Move-In is a rite of passage.

“I’ve spent the whole day reminiscing, especially since I also stayed in Eagle Village. Helping others move in, even on the first floor, feels surreal as it’s a fresh set of students ready to embark on their journeys here,” said volunteer Janae Harris.

More than 29,000 students total will be coming back to class on Wednesday.

Freshmen told their move-in experience has been a rollercoaster of emotions.

“It was stressful,” said Zenchuk. “It was very chaotic, and the room seemed to get worse before getting better. There was stuff scattered absolutely everywhere.”

“Saying goodbye to our parents was sad, but we’re having so much fun now. We’re totally fine and keep them updated,” said Dominick.

Freshman said they’re most excited to meet new people and explore all that the university has to offer.

“I’m ready for it. I’m excited,” said Seymour.

“I’m physically ready, but mentally not ready,” said freshman Caiden Adams. “I miss my home already.”

Move-in continues through the weekend, running until Georgia Southern’s first day of classes on Aug. 13. Expect increased traffic both on the roads and in grocery stores during this period.
