ORLANDO, Fla. – In a bid to revitalize its downtown area, Orlando is rolling out a series of redevelopment projects designed to draw more visitors and breathe new life into the city center.

A significant part of the initiative focuses on West Church Street, which stretches from Garland Avenue to John Young Parkway. On Monday, the city council is set to appoint a contractor to spearhead a transformative project along this approximately two-mile corridor.

The revitalization effort aims to enhance traffic flow, decrease congestion, and improve pedestrian crossings, making the area more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

West Church Street is a bustling thoroughfare, particularly during events at major venues like the Kia Center, Inter & Co. Stadium, and Camping World Stadium.

Following these events, the street becomes a hub of activity as thousands of attendees move through the area. Residents are hopeful that the planned upgrades will help alleviate the congestion and streamline the movement of crowds.

The city’s goal is to make Church Street feel just as lively during the day as it does at night, while making it more comfortable and safer for pedestrians.

Improvements to the street, along with a $400-million upgrade to Camping World Stadium, could entice people to arrive earlier for events and stay later, boosting the local economy and creating a thriving downtown.

“I think expansion and growth is good as long as it’s here to listen to what Orlando wants,” resident Sedrick Bernard.

This redevelopment is part of Orlando’s broader effort to revitalize downtown. It will complement the Canopy Project, which will transform the I-4 underpass on Church Street into an immersive, multimodal public space.
