ORLANDO, Fla. – In late January, an incident involving a green pickup truck led to the hospitalization of four individuals after it collided with the One Heart for Women and Children food pantry located near the College Park area.

The entrance of the pantry was accidentally struck by a customer coming for donations from the center.

“And just the smoke from the tires and all the debris from all of this like it was coming in fast,” recalled Stephanie Bowman, the founder of One Heart for Women and Children.

“So all four of us are on the ground and it was scary,” she said.

The accident resulted in the loss of essential food supplies for the organization and severely damaged the structure of their main entrance door, necessitating an early closure for reconstruction purposes.

“The day that the accident happened, we lost a lot of food that day. Not only that day, but we had to be closed for a little bit,” said Bowman. “So it was letting the community know the other places where they could go get food. And it was also losing dollars that came in here to one heart.”

All four people who were injured in the crash, including Bowman, have since been discharged from the hospital and are recovering well.

The One Heart team calls the driver who crashed into their pantry every week to make sure he is OK.

“That’s really what our mission is here at One Heart, we’re just here to love one person at a time.”

Five months later, One Heart for Women and Children is still missing its front door, but they hope to have a replacement in the next few weeks.

Anyone needing help from the food pantry can sign up for the program on the group’s website, or by going to the pantry on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to meet with pantry staff.

The pantry is located at 2040 N. Rio Grande Ave. in Orlando.
