A food company in Massachusetts is pulling over 24,000 pounds of pre-cooked chicken sausage off the shelves because they might contain plastic fragments.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) shared the recall details on July 17. Kayem Foods Inc., based in Chelsea, Massachusetts, is recalling 24,173 pounds of chicken sausage they’ve distributed to stores across the country.

The FSIS said Kayem Foods reported three people had sent in complaints concerning the foreign material, though there were no injuries.

According to the alert, “FSIS is worried that some of these products might still be in customers’ refrigerators or freezers. It is advised that those who have these items should not eat them,” the alert states. “These items should either be disposed of or taken back to the store where they were bought.”

Consumers can identify the recalled sausage by the packaging and its markings, according to the alert:

  • The sausages are sealed in 11-ounce vacuum-packed packages marketed as “All natural al fresco chicken sausage sweet apple with Vermont made syrup”
  • Recalled packages bear the establishment number “P-7839” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection
  • Recalled packages are printed with a with the lot code “179” and a “USE/FRZ BY” date of Oct. 1, 2025 on the back label of the package

Anyone with additional questions is being instructed to contact Kayem Foods Inc. at 617-889-1600 (extension 247) or reach out via email to jwest@kayem.com. This with questions for the USDA can call the USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854, or email mphotline@usda.gov.
