ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – Two restaurant proprietors ended up incarcerated in Brevard County following a comprehensive investigation spanning several states into a fraudulent gift card scheme preying on senior citizens.
Dongdong Ye and Mei Mei Dong, who manage Da Sushi near Aldi in Rockledge, are charged with deceiving a 76-year-old Wisconsin man into transferring $10,000 to them.
Investigators said Ye and Dong spent the money on a golf cart at the Rockledge Lowe’s.
There were also scam victims in Ohio and Michigan, including a woman who was 85 and sent the couple $75,000, the report continues.
Ye and Dong secured their release on bond, and on Friday, Dong was at home when Rockledge community correspondent James Sparvero visited, responding when Sparvero knocked on their door.
Dong said she couldn’t talk about the allegations.
“There’s no comments until we talk to a lawyer,” she said. “I can’t say anything.”
Da Sushi remains open.
The owners have a hearing in Brevard next week. Then, they may have to travel out of state to face their charges as the case proceeds.
