PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Over a thousand dogs put their paws to the sands of Seaside when the Corgi Beach Takeover returned for its third year Saturday afternoon.

This year featured races, costume contests, a silent auction and dozens of raffle items, as well as a beer garden hosted by Pelican Brewing, all to raise money for the Oregon Humane Society.

According to the shelter, the corgi meetup is one of their most important fundraising events.

It has also become iconic enough that it led to the introduction of House Resolution 42 into the Oregon legislature, in effort to designate the corgi as the official state dog.

“We are so grateful to all the pets and people who attend Corgi Beach Takeover and support Oregon Humane Society,” says Shelby Hollenbeck, OHS Events Manager. “I can’t think of a better, or more adorable, way to spend a day at the beach.”

Overall, OHS estimated 900 corgis and 300 “non-corgis” enjoyed the day’s festivities.

Additionally, close to 1,500 people were in attendance, with participants traveling to Seaside from all over, including Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky and even Germany.

Further, OHS projects to have raised more than $30,000, all for the benefit of thousands of shelter pets.
