Pickleball brawl: Couple faces charges in fight at Spruce Creek Country Club


VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A couple from Volusia County is facing legal trouble following a reported altercation with their pickleball opponents on Sunday, as detailed by the sheriff’s office.

According to official records, Anthony Sapienza, 63, and Julianne Sapienza, 51, were taken into custody that afternoon at Spruce Creek Country Club.

Law enforcement and emergency services were dispatched to the club after receiving reports of a physical dispute involving more than a dozen individuals, some of whom sustained injuries, as stated in an arrest affidavit.

A distressed 911 caller urged, “Come quick please (…) there’s about 20 people. Somebody hit somebody with a pickleball paddle, hit somebody in the head. Please, oh my God.”

Anthony Sapienza is facing charges of aggravated battery causing bodily harm and two counts of battery on a person aged 65 or older. Meanwhile, Julianne Sapienza has been charged with battery on a person 65 or older. Both individuals have since been released on bond, as per the records.
