Police arrest armed employee after standoff at Stellantis plant

() Police arrested a Stellantis employee Saturday following a three-hour standoff at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan.

The Sterling Heights Police said officers responded to a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. reporting an armed man who may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, the Detroit News reported.

“When the call came in, the caller said the man was armed and possibly hallucinating, so we don’t know if he is under the influence of something or if it is a mental health situation, but we are still working that out right now,” Captain Mario Bastianelli told the outlet. “If there is a need, we will get him medical care, but we don’t know his status right now.”

Upon arrival, officers located the man in the center of the plant and contained him in a small area.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported. The man eventually surrendered peacefully after being isolated by police and SWAT units, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Bastianelli said the plant was shut down for several hours during the incident but reopened shortly after the man was taken into custody. Production was not running at the time, and the limited staff on-site was safely evacuated.

Police have not identified the man or disclosed how long he had worked at the plant. His motive for bringing a gun to the facility remains unclear.

The man was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police say they are awaiting results before deciding on potential charges.
