New nursing home could come to Champaign County

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Advocates for Aging Care, a community-driven initiative advocating for superior long-term care solutions in Central Illinois, secured a $500,000 grant from the State of Illinois on Tuesday. This funding aims to facilitate the planning phase for a new nursing facility in Champaign County.

AAC’s coordinator Cathy Emanuel said this comes after a longstanding problem in the area.

“Champaign County is facing a real crisis,” noted Emanuel. “We require approximately 700 beds, yet only have 400. This shortfall limits our capacity to serve about 60 percent of individuals who need care in our area.”

The shortage in Champaign County is the worst of all 101 counties in the state. But, more and more counties are encountering the issue.

Back in 2021, only two counties experienced a lack of skilled nursing beds. As of 2023, that number has risen to 16 counties. With this recent funding, the initiative will move forward to establish 100 Medicaid-accessible beds for seniors.

“The group is tasked with determining how best to develop a facility that includes trained caregivers to deliver this essential care,” explained Sen. Paul Faraci (D-Champaign). “The funds could potentially be allocated for land acquisition, as well as for capital enhancements and construction.”

The location of the nursing home is still up in the air.

Emanuel said AAC may look toward an old tax which funded the Champaign County Nursing Home until it closed in 2023.

“Those taxes continue to be collected,” Emanuel pointed out. “With no existing Champaign County Nursing Home, we are hopeful that a portion of those taxes can support a not-for-profit nursing facility.”

They hope to break ground next year and open the facility in 2027.
