AUGUSTA, Ga. () – For thousands, trash day in Augusta also meant recycling day, but soon that’s no longer going to be automatic.

“That’s just ridiculous, I never heard such thing. That’s supposed to help the environment besides you know,” said Fawn.

Augusta is informing the public that recycling is no longer included in the city trash service, and those who wish to recycle need to register with the hauler Coastal Waste and Recycling. Enrollment begins on Friday.

“I think that’s terrible. That’s terrible. That’s the only words I have for it, it’s not a good thing,”

said Denise Sykes.

There is a cost involved. The price varies depending on the level of service customers desire. For those wanting weekly recycling service, similar to what is currently offered, there will be an extra charge of $178 in addition to the regular trash fee.

“You got to pay for a recycling bin? No lie, sounds like a scam to me,” said Tristan Jones.

“At that price will you stop?”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. Put it in the trash can I guess,” said Fawn.

“So you will quit recycling?”

“Probably have to. I can’t afford those prices,” said Fawn.

“Why do we have to pay for it? That’s ridiculous, like we don’t have enough bills,” said Sykes.

At present, the recycling bin is being used as an additional trash can. Since the city has discontinued the service, these bins will be removed starting November 1st unless trash customers choose to pay for the service.
