Rhode Island assistant AG suspended after warning officers they would 'regret' her arrest

Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Suspended After Warning Officers They’d ‘Regret’ Arresting Her

A special assistant attorney general from Rhode Island has been suspended without pay for six months following an incident with Newport police, during which she warned officers, “You’re going to regret this,” according to the attorney general.

Devon Hogan Flanagan, along with a friend, was asked to leave Clarke Cooke House in Newport when the police arrived on August 14, as captured by body camera footage.

After an argument that resulted in their arrests, Flanagan told the officers, “You’re going to regret this,” and “I’m an AG,” the video showed.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha remarked, “Flanagan disrespected the Newport Police Department and brought embarrassment to herself, the Office, and to me personally,” in his statement.

He said he met with Flanagan on Monday and told her she was placed on unpaid leave for six months.

Neronha expressed his hopes that Flanagan uses this time to understand the gravity of her actions and make positive life changes. He stated, “She faces a challenging journey, but I believe our toughest times can push us to improve ourselves.”

Flanagan has been with the attorney general’s office for seven years, working in the Criminal Division’s Appellate Unit, as indicated by the state attorney general’s office.

Neronha said in an interview with WPRO Radio on Aug. 19 that Flanagan regretted the incident.

“She’s really remorseful, and she takes responsibility — and that doesn’t surprise me, knowing who she is,” Neronha said.
