Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani suffered multiple injuries, including a spinal fracture, during a car accident on Saturday evening, according to Michael Ragusa, who claims to be the head of Giuliani’s security team.

Ragusa said in a statement posted to X on Sunday that Giuliani’s vehicle “was struck from behind at high speed” on a highway on Saturday.

“He was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was found to have a fractured thoracic vertebra, several cuts and bruises, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg,” Ragusa stated in a release shared on Giuliani’s social media.

When asked for more details on Giuliani’s condition, Ragusa stated that the former mayor was “in high spirits” and “completely alert and conscious.” He also mentioned that Giuliani’s doctors are “satisfied with his recovery.”

Ragusa highlighted in another social media update that the car accident “was not a targeted attack.” However, he did not provide NBC News with details on whether any suspect was identified or detained.

The former mayor’s son, Andrew Giuliani, addressed the incident on X, expressing gratitude for “everyone who reached out after learning about this incident involving my father.”

“Your prayers mean the world. As a son, I can tell you I’m honored to have a Dad that I can call the toughest SOB I’ve ever seen!” he added.

Ted Goodman, who has served as a representative for Giuliani, did not immediately return NBC News’ request for further details about the incident.
