Sarah Bush Lincoln's Ambitious Expansion: Transforming Cancer Care in the Region

MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Sarah Bush Lincoln has unveiled plans to expand its Regional Cancer Center by an additional 15,000 square feet. According to SBL leadership, this expansion is in response to the increasing need for cancer care services across Central Illinois.

“Back in 2020, our Cancer Center welcomed around 25,000 visits annually,” explained Jessi Bergfeld, SBL’s Administrative Director of Practice Management. “As of this year, we anticipate reaching nearly 47,000 visits.”

When the SBL facility initially opened its doors almost a decade ago, it featured 17 infusion bays, which sufficed for the patient volume at that time. However, with the patient load having nearly doubled, there is a pressing need for additional space and equipment.

The planned expansion will include the addition of more chemotherapy and specialized infusion bays, eight new exam rooms, an expanded waiting area, and increased parking capacity. Additionally, there will be a dedicated area for non-oncology medical infusion services.

Construction is set to commence in the fall. The project is being partially financed through the Expanding Hope campaign, an initiative by the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation.

In 2015, the campaign “Building Hope” raised funds for the construction of the existing Regional Cancer Center. The campaign raised almost $4 million for the $15.8 million facility. Now, the goal of the Expanding Hope campaign is to raise at least $2 million.
