Savoy D-Day veteran celebrates 100 years

SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — D-Day Veteran and current Savoy resident Duane “Harvey” Hodges celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday.

Family and friends came together to celebrate the veteran’s birthday, which included a lively band performing classic hits and a 21-gun salute carried out by his comrades.

Some of his favorite memories include meeting his wife, travelling the world with her and joining car clubs.

In 100 years, he has amassed a lot of wisdom and hopes people don’t take their time for granted.

“Visit the places you have in mind, meet the people you wish to see, especially if there’s someone you deeply care about, make the effort to see them now, because unexpected events occur, and they might not be around when you assume you will have the opportunity,” advised Hodges.

Hodges urges people — if they have a bucket list — to knock out the tasks they really want to do as soon as they can.

“Don’t postpone,” Hodges said.
