ORLANDO, Fla. – SeaWorld made a somber announcement on Sunday regarding the passing of Katina, one of its cherished killer whales, who died at the age of 50 following a gradual decline in health.
The theme park revealed that Katina’s health had deteriorated significantly in recent weeks as she reached her senior years. Throughout this period, SeaWorld’s animal care and medical teams closely monitored her condition, ultimately focusing on ensuring her comfort and well-being. Katina passed away surrounded by dedicated staff members who had interacted with her for nearly 40 years.
SeaWorld fondly remembered Katina for her “big personality” and unique traits, such as playfully sticking out her tongue and executing her signature “speed swim,” creating a whirlwind of water in her enclosure.
For many years, Katina played a pivotal role at SeaWorld, inspiring countless visitors to deepen their understanding of killer whales, according to park officials.
In a heartfelt message on social media, SeaWorld expressed the profound sense of loss felt by those who knew and loved Katina, thanking the community and her many admirers for their support during this challenging time.
