CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Drivers in the Champaign-Urbana area may need to plan alternative routes due to a series of street closures starting Monday.
The work ranges from sewer repairs to street improvements.
Urbana
In Urbana, North Race Street’s southbound lane will be inaccessible between West Main Street and West University Avenue. This closure will commence at 7 a.m. on September 29 and is slated to continue until 5 p.m. on October 3. According to city officials, the shutdown is necessary for Illinois American Water contractors to undertake essential work.
Drivers are asked to detour to North Broadway Avenue while the closure is in effect.

Champaign
In Champaign, Harvard Street will be closed off between Prospect Avenue and Harris Avenue starting on Monday. It is anticipated to open again by Monday, October 6. Officials explained that this closure facilitates a sanitary sewer repair. While Harvard Street will not allow through traffic, access to all local properties will remain open, officials assured.

Additionally, Bloomington Road in Champaign will partially close on Monday for storm sewer maintenance. Crews will operate on the section between Prospect Avenue and Harris Avenue from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily until October 3. Although temporary lane closures might lead to delays, no full road closures are projected, according to city officials.

City officials also announced that several streets will close on Monday for the city’s 2025 Concrete Street Improvements Project. This includes:
- One lane of Clover Lane and one lane of Branch Road at the intersection
- One lane of Sumac Drive and one lane of Winchester Drive at the intersection
The anticipated duration for these closures is seven days. Drivers are urged to stay alert to construction signs and traffic control devices. It is requested that during this period, vehicles should not park on the streets near construction zones or in any areas marked with “No Parking” signs.
