A man in Wise County, Va., identified as William Marion Huneycutt III, is facing multiple charges, such as felony eluding and reckless driving, following an alleged attempt to escape from county deputies on Thursday.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office revealed in a press announcement that deputies tried to stop Huneycutt, who was driving a silver Porsche, in the Cold Springs Drive area of Appalachia.

Huneycutt allegedly fled from police, and the vehicle was later found at his home in the 100 block of Cold Springs Drive.

Deputies believed that Huneycutt had barricaded himself inside the home, the sheriff’s office reported.

“A search warrant was issued, and law enforcement closely watched the house while special tactical teams prepared to intervene,” the press release mentioned. “Attempts to communicate with Huneycutt were continuously ignored. Tactical teams entered the property using cameras and chemical agents but discovered it vacant. Clues suggested he might be hiding in the nearby National Forest and had not been in the residence during the standoff.”

Search groups, supported by a K-9 unit, discovered items like tents and hunting blinds in the woods, signifying that Huneycutt remained in the vicinity, according to the sheriff’s office statement.

On Friday morning, deputies were informed that Huneycutt was seen in the Cold Springs Drive area asking for help.

He was later arrested and charged with the following:

  • Felony eluding
  • Assault on law enforcement (two counts)
  • Reckless driving
  • Petit larceny/shoplifting
  • Various traffic offenses

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be placed, the sheriff’s office stated.

Wise County Sheriff E. Grant Kilgore thanked law enforcement, first responders and personnel who assisted in the incident.
