SNAP deadline: What happens to unused benefits on your EBT card after Nov. 1?

The reality has set in: If the federal government shutdown extends into the weekend, November’s SNAP benefits will not be distributed. This decision has prompted a flurry of activity among states, with some attempting to find alternative funding solutions to support their residents. Meanwhile, other states have issued warnings to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients, advising them to brace for accounts that might remain empty unless they’ve been exceptionally prudent with their budgets.

SNAP, previously known as the Food Stamp Program, is a vital initiative aimed at assisting low-income individuals, those with no income, and people with disabilities in purchasing groceries. Although the program is financed through federal funds, its administration falls under the jurisdiction of individual states.

Typically, qualified individuals receive their SNAP benefits on a monthly basis, with each state determining its own distribution schedule. These benefits are electronically loaded onto an EBT card, functioning much like a debit card at authorized retailers that accept SNAP.
