Same expectations for state champs, despite losing head coach, QB

BLUFFTON, S.C. () — The expectations remain the same for the Class 1A State Champions, Thomas Heyward, despite two key departures.

Thomas Heyward Academy has undergone a change in leadership, as last year’s head coach, Taylor Malphrus, is no longer with the team. Daniel Bryan, who served as the offensive line coach last season, has stepped into the head coaching role.

The Rebels will be entering the season with a freshman quarterback. Given their remarkable record of securing five state championships in the past seven years, this could be a daunting challenge. However, Coach Bryan has expressed high praise for the young quarterback’s potential.

“Initially, I was concerned when we discussed him stepping up as the starter,” Coach Bryan admitted. “But once he got on the field, his ability to learn quickly became evident. He’s like a sponge, absorbing everything we teach.”

“Staying more disciplined at a safety and receiver,” senior Josh Gibson said. “As you know, sometimes you like to jump or hesitate on certain routes or buy on double moves.”

Thomas Heyward will be in the Hostess City for its first game. They face Bethesda Academy on Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
