SAVANNAH, Ga. — Southeastern Technical College (STC) officials have introduced a new scholarship dedicated to honoring a longtime champion of technical and adult education.

The fund, which is over $68,000, was established by the family of Mary Flanders, a Swainsboro native now living in Savannah.

Flanders dedicated 20 years to serving on the Technical College System of Georgia State Board of Directors. During her tenure, she worked under Governors Sonny Perdue, Nathan Deal, and Brian Kemp before her retirement in October 2023.

STC President Larry Calhoun commended Flanders for her dedicated efforts in expanding learning opportunities for adults. He highlighted how her leadership was instrumental in establishing various pathways that allow students to obtain diplomas and college credits concurrently.

“Previously, students had to secure a GED before they could enroll in college courses,” Calhoun explained. “Because of Mrs. Flanders’ significant contributions, adult education students now have multiple paths to achieve success. They can earn a high school equivalency or diploma through TCSG while simultaneously taking college courses. High school equivalency can now be achieved via General Education Development, HiSet, or through unique programs like the STC Career Academy, Career Plus High School Diploma, Dual Achievement Program, or Cognia.”

The announcement was made during the 2025 Southeastern Technical College Foundation’s Annual Appreciation BBQ.
