A community event, hosted by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office along with other first responders, took place in Blountville, Tenn., on Tuesday night to celebrate National Night Out.

National Night Out is a nationwide effort from local law enforcement to engage with their communities.

Outside the sheriff’s office, attendees engaged in various activities including enjoying bounce houses, sampling food, and participating in interactive sessions designed to provide insight into the roles of the county’s first responders.

Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy said the event helps build a relationship with community members.

Lt. Chris Farmer, an organizer of the event, said it was great getting to collaborate with all departments in planning the event.

“Although we frequently collaborate, doing so in this setting is unique,” Farmer expressed. “Organizing this event together has been a wonderful experience for everyone involved. We hope to continue working together on more initiatives moving forward.”

Norma Durna, a resident of Sullivan County, shared that the event was an unexpected delight for her grandson, who aspires to become a police officer.

“He asked, ‘Where are we headed?’ and as we arrived, he was amazed by the fire trucks, police vehicles, and especially the bouncy houses. He exclaimed, ‘This is the best surprise ever,'” recounted Durna.

The sheriff’s office said it hopes to participate in National Night Out each year.
