The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is bringing its mobile collection service for household hazardous waste to Sullivan County this Saturday.

This service is complimentary and available to all residents in the area, regardless of whether they live in the county, TDEC announced. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sullivan Central Middle School, located at 131 Shipley Ferry Road.

“Residents of Tennessee are encouraged to bring hazardous household items—such as cleaning products, pesticides, and pool chemicals—to the designated drop-off points,” TDEC noted in a press release. “Participation is open to everyone, irrespective of their county of residence.”

The press release explained that materials classified as “household hazardous waste” include those that are flammable, toxic, reactive, or corrosive, which shouldn’t be thrown away with regular waste.

Typical items collected during these events are cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lamps, lithium and button batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, pool chemicals, paint thinners, and used needles securely contained.

However, items such as ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers, which should be disposed of in the normal trash, will not be accepted at TDEC’s collection services.

More information about TDEC’s household hazardous waste collection services can be found on TN.gov.
