About one-third of U.S. adults are in favor of President Trump sending National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., based on the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.

This recent poll, gathered over the past weekend, indicates that 38% of U.S. adults support the deployment of the National Guard to the capital, whereas 46% are against it, and 16% are uncertain.

There is a sharp divide in support by party, however.

The survey reveals a strong partisan divide, with a substantial majority of Republicans, 76%, agreeing with the deployment in the District, in contrast to 12% who oppose it, and 13% who are unsure.

On the other hand, Democrats largely disapprove of Trump’s decision, as 80% oppose sending the National Guard to Washington, only 8% are in favor, and 12% remain undecided.

Among those who don’t affiliate with either party, 52 percent oppose the National Guard deployment, 28 percent support it, and 21 percent don’t know.

Earlier this month, Trump ordered the deployment of hundreds of Guard members to the capital and took control of the local police force in a bid to tackle rising crime rates.

As of the weekend, Guard troop numbers had risen beyond 2,200, including almost 1,000 from the District’s National Guard. Additionally, several states with Republican leadership, like Mississippi, Ohio, and West Virginia, have contributed personnel.

The latest survey shows similar levels of support for the federal government taking control of Washington, D.C.’s, local police force, with support from 36 percent of adults overall, including 71 percent of Republicans and 8 percent of Democrats.

The survey included 1,022 U.S. adults and was conducted Aug. 22-24, 2025. The margin of error is 3 percentage points overall and 5-6 percentage points for individual groups.
