WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — The Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday that the suspect deemed “armed and dangerous” in connection to two shootings in April has been apprehended.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Service and reliable intelligence led authorities to locate fugitive Harley Pope.
The Special Response Team (SRT) of the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office arrived at Pope’s location, attempting to peacefully communicate with him to surrender. When he refused, the SRT entered his residence, prompting Pope to escape through the back into a nearby wooded area.
After a brief manhunt, Pope was apprehended without incident, the release said.
Pope was wanted out of Virginia and Tennessee for two separate shooting incidents, one in Bluff City and one in Bristol, Virginia. According to the release, his charges are as follows:
Bristol, Virginia:
- Felony Assault – Malicious Wounding Resulting in Severe Injury (VA Code 18.2-51.2)
- Felony Shooting Into an Occupied Dwelling (VA Code 18.2-279)
- Misdemeanor Reckless Handling of a Firearm (VA Code 18.2-56.1)
Sullivan County, Tennessee:
- Failure to Appear / Probation Violation (TN Code 39-16-609)
- Aggravated Assault – Domestic (TN Code 39-13-102)
- Aggravated Assault (x2) (TN Code 39-13-102)
- Rape (TN Code 39-13-503)
- False Imprisonment (TN Code 39-13-302)
- Vandalism (TN Code 39-14-408)
- Evading Arrest (x4) (TN Code 39-16-603)
Bristol, Tennessee:
- Aggravated Burglary (TN Code 39-13-1003)
Pope is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
