In TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA), Feeding Tampa Bay, a leading nonprofit organization serving Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, anticipates an increase in the number of hungry families if the U.S. Federal Government shuts down by the deadline of midnight on October 1.

The Tampa Bay area, including Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, and Hillsborough Counties, is home to approximately 31,000 federal employees, as reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“There are individuals within our community who might suddenly find themselves without an income. Even though their paychecks disappear, their work responsibilities and bills remain. Our mission at Feeding Tampa Bay is to fill that gap and provide support during such times,” explained Tom Mantz, CEO of Feeding Tampa Bay.

The organization, known for distributing free food and groceries to countless families each year, is seeking donations and more volunteers in preparation for an anticipated increase in people requiring assistance. It remains uncertain how many employees in the four major counties might face layoffs due to a potential shutdown.

“We may set up a food pantry at the airport, much like we did during the previous government shutdown. We will also expand resource availability at Causeway Center and other locations to help people manage during a shutdown,” Mantz mentioned.

Around 600 families were given food for both themselves and their pets at a giveaway Tuesday afternoon, with lines stretching down the street.

“We arrived early due to worries about long lines. I’m deeply concerned about the shutdown as it could change everything. My son serves in the military, and I’m anxious about his pay and supporting his family—this concern is foremost in my mind,” shared Lucy Estrella from Hillsborough County.

If you would like to assist Feeding Tampa Bay, they ask that you volunteer your time or donate food to their food bank.
