Target to end Price Match Guarantee with Walmart, Amazon

(NEXSTAR) – Target has announced an update to its Price Match Guarantee program. Previously, customers could match the price of a Target item if they found it cheaper at retailers like Amazon or Walmart. However, the program will soon only apply to price matches within Target’s own stores or on Target.com.

The program will still allow price-matching with Walmart and Amazon until July 28, a representative for Target confirmed.

The program was initially launched to assure customers they were getting the best price without compromising their shopping experience, as noted on Target’s website. However, the company observed that customers predominantly used the Price Match Guarantee to compare Target’s prices internally—either between the store and online prices—or to request a price adjustment within 14 days after purchase.

“We’ve found our guests overwhelmingly price match Target and not other retailers, which reflects the great value and trust in pricing consumers see across our assortment and deals,” Target stated in a message shared with Nexstar.

Target’s policy, after July 28, will still allow for price adjustments within a 14-day window.

“We’re always working to deliver consumers outstanding value and give them confidence to choose Target, with our everyday low prices, affordable and quality-focused owned brands, incredible deals, free-to-join membership program, Target Circle, and more,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Target was the only retailer of the three (Target, Walmart, Amazon) that had continued to offer a price-matching policy for items found at the rival retailers. Walmart’s current policy does not allow for price-matching against competitors, and Amazon does not offer price-matching, claiming its prices are “constantly” being evaluated to stay competitive.
