The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has summoned the CEOs of the social media and tech platforms Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit to testify on October 8 regarding online user radicalization.
The committee highlighted in a press release on Wednesday that the hearing aims to explore the radicalization of users, including the encouragement of politically motivated acts. This announcement surfaces shortly after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“In light of this tragic event and other politically driven violence, it’s crucial for Congress to examine the online platforms enabling radicals to promote political violence,” said committee Chairman James Comer. “To prevent further radicalization and violence, the CEOs of these platforms must attend the Oversight Committee hearing to detail the measures they are implementing to prevent their platforms’ misuse for malevolent activities.”
This situation follows reports that Tyler Robinson, the accused in Kirk’s murder, allegedly revealed his intentions to friends in an online chat before his arrest. At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the agency is investigating “all individuals” involved in a Discord chatroom with Robinson.
