18-year-old killed in overnight Springfield shooting; two others hurt

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A teenager was killed and two other people were hurt in a shooting that happened Monday evening in Springfield.

The incident occurred near the intersection of 14th Street and Cornell Avenue. According to a statement from Springfield Police on Tuesday morning, officers were dispatched to a shooting report at 5:51 p.m., where they discovered three individuals with gunshot injuries.

All the injured parties were taken to local hospitals for medical care. Two of the individuals sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, while the third victim was found unresponsive and subsequently passed away at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. The death was recorded at 6:52 p.m.

Jim Allmon, the Sangamon County Coroner, released his own statement, identifying the deceased as an 18-year-old Rochester resident. An autopsy is planned.

The investigation into the deadly shooting is ongoing, and police said additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
