The Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council (ARCD) took a significant step in aiding farmers affected by Hurricane Helene by organizing a Tennessee Stream Team Recruitment Event in Jonesborough, Tennessee. This initiative underscores ARCD’s dedication to restoring the agricultural landscape in the aftermath of the disaster.

Andrea Ludwig, a professor and extension specialist from the University of Tennessee’s Biosystems Engineering and Civil Science Department, emphasized the uniqueness of each stream in Tennessee.

“Our riverbanks and waterfront properties experienced significant damage,” Ludwig explained. “There’s a pressing need for restoration to stabilize and rejuvenate these areas. We’re here to rally support and recruit individuals committed to seeing this transformation happen. We’ve discussed early challenges, such as farmers losing land and resources, which we aim to restore.”

According to Andy Brown, ARCD’s executive director, farmers have faced numerous challenges, including eroding banks, soil degradation, silt buildup, and the loss of fields due to flooding.

“Volunteers are crucial,” Brown stated. “Whether you can commit a year or just a day, your help is needed. From dedicating a day to digging holes to a long-term involvement, we want people to know there are various ways to contribute.”
