Theatre Bristol reflects on 100 years of entertainment

BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — Theatre Bristol celebrated two milestones on Sunday night.

In February, Theatre Bristol acquired the Cameo Theater after it had been up for sale for over a year. To celebrate the new stage in its rotation and a century of selling tickets (minus the one year it was up for sale), Theatre Bristol hosted “Centennial Open House—100 Years of Entertainment!”

The event featured a century of stories, memories and performances. Attendees reconnected with friends from past productions and met with other theater lovers in the community.

“For Theatre Bristol, this is an amazing accomplishment with the help of the community to be here, because our arts-based theater, which is a black box theater, is wonderful. It only has 94 seats, but being at the cameo means now we have over 500 seats, and we don’t have to turn away school children or turn away audiences from shows. We can accommodate a lot more people,” Samantha Gray, Theatre Bristol executive director, said.

Gray said donations and support from the community are what keep the curtains open. The theater recently launched its Cameo Arts Capital Campaign, an initiative to redevelop the multi-use ARTspace Theatre.
