THOMSON, Ga () – Thomson Housing Authority holding a Back to School Bash.

Dozens in Thomson are excited for the school year to start and to get some school supplies.

Don Cummings with Sweetwater Baptist Church and Chad Widener with Faith Baptist Church worked for 6 months to put the event together.

The decision to host the Back to School Bash in Thomson stemmed from Cummings’ observation that while there are numerous resources available for residents in the Augusta/Richmond County vicinity, other areas are not similarly equipped.

“In more rural areas, these kinds of events are scarce. This left us thinking, why should such events be confined to bigger cities? There are just as many people in need in rural communities, people who deserve to feel valued and supported. Hosting this in our community is tremendously important to us,” expressed Don Cummings, Chairman & Founder of Sons of Consolation Ministries.

They prepared 400 backpacks and hope to give them all away.

At the event they had clothes, food, shoes and some games for people to enjoy.

Widener says its special to see the community be able to come together and support one another.

“There’s so much division in our world and communities today. Our goal is to foster unity within church congregations and across the wider community,” shared Chad Widener, Pastor at Faith Baptist Church.

Cummings says putting the event together was a lot of hard work but to see it all come together and see people having fun is all worth it.

“Today, we have representation from at least five churches, as well as 15 to 20 different civic and community organizations. It’s heartening to witness such comprehensive community collaboration and to see churches unite for a common cause,” Cummings remarked.

If you were not able to make it the East Georgia Housing Authority Partners will be posting on their Facebook if there are any school supplies left.
