FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) – A tragic incident unfolded in Fremont as two individuals lost their lives, and a child is missing following a train accident that struck multiple pedestrians on Sunday evening, according to local authorities. Emergency responders are currently present at the location.

Mayor Danny Sanchez told FOX 8 News crews at the scene that a family was in town from Fort Wayne, Indiana, on a fishing trip at the Sandusky River.

The two people who died were a 58-year-old woman and a 38-year-old woman, believed to be mother and daughter, Sanchez said.

Search efforts are concentrated on locating a missing 5-year-old child in the river. Another child, approximately 14 months old, has been transported to a hospital in Toledo, as reported by Sanchez. The condition of this child remains uncertain at this time.

The Fremont Police Department reports that the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Miles Newton Bridge in Fremont, which spans the Sandusky River at Hayes Avenue.

The Fremont, Ohio Police Department posted to Facebook Sunday evening around 8:25 p.m., saying, “Emergency crews are working on a pedestrian vs. train accident near the Miles Newton Bridge.  Stay clear, State Street is open, Miles Newton bridge is closed.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office did confirm to FOX 8 News that their dive team was requested to assist in the incident at around 8:30 p.m.
