NOCATEE, Fla. – A tragic golf cart accident in St. Johns County has led to DUI charges against a 64-year-old man after the incident resulted in the death of his wife, as detailed in an arrest report obtained by News4JAX, a partner of News 6.
The unfortunate event occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on November 30, at the intersection of Recollection Drive and Dawes Avenue in Nocatee.
At the time of the crash, the man’s wife, who was in her 50s, was riding as a passenger. The golf cart, driven by her husband, overturned, causing her to be ejected and suffer a severe head injury upon impact with the ground.
She was immediately airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver now faces charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to DUI testing, according to authorities.
Arrest documents reveal that the driver exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot, watery eyes, and a noticeable odor of alcohol detectable from a distance of three feet in an open area.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is handling the ongoing investigation.
It’s unclear if the driver’s charges will be upgraded after his wife’s death.
