A student was killed after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of a private San Fernando Valley school and at least five others were injured, authorities announced Wednesday afternoon.

Personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of the incident at Campbell Hall, located at 4533 Laurel Canyon Boulevard, in Studio City just after 3 p.m., fire officials said in a news release.

According to the L.A. Police Department, the incident occurred at the end of the school day during pick up at the rear of the campus, when the driver of a green 2025 Rivian SUV reportedly struck a 15-year-old boy as he was walking in between vehicles.

The boy was pinned and possibly crushed between the Rivian and a smaller, white SUV, officials said. LAFD paramedics rushed him, along with his uninjured father who witnessed the terrible accident, to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Aerial footage of the scene captured by Sky5 showed both police and firefighters at the location where a canopy had been set up between the Rivian and a smaller white SUV. Canopies are typically used to cover victims suffering from grave injuries before they are taken to the hospital.

Because student pick ups are done at very slow speeds, there is speculation that the Rivian’s driver may have inadvertently hit the gas pedal instead of the vehicle’s brakes, leading to a chain reaction and tragic consequences. Investigators, however, have not confirmed that detail.

Two other students and three adults were also reportedly injured during the incident, fire officials stated in an updated release, only describing their conditions as “unspecified” and “non-life threatening.”

LAFD Cpt. Adam Van Gerpen said the traumatic ordeal impacted everyone present.

“There’s a lot of kids getting out of school, getting ready for summer who witnessed this,” he said. “Also, this is hard on our firefighters, when you have a teenager who is transported in grave condition.”

The mayor’s crisis team was en route to offer emotional support and recovery assistance to relatives and witnesses at the scene.

L.A. County Board Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, who represents Studio City, released a statement on X, saying:

“My heart is with the entire Campbell Hall community during this tragic time.”

In an email sent to parents with children at the private Episcopalian school obtained by KTLA, the Head of School Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull said he and school officials are “heartbroken” over the tragic loss.

“Our collective hearts and thoughts are with the family,” he continued. “I know that the Campbell Hall community will be there for all of them in the challenging days and weeks ahead. In the meantime, please respect the family’s privacy as they process this overwhelming loss.”

The email further stated that there would be no classes or final exams on Thursday, but that members of the school community are welcome to gather in the Garver Gym where counselors will be present between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

LAPD Lt. Matthew Bielski said the department is acknowledging that the incident was a tragic accident and that no charges will be filed against anyone involved.

KTLA has attempted to contact school officials for comment, but has, so far, not heard back.
