In a tragic incident on Saturday, a young man lost his life while snorkeling in the St. Johns River in Orange City, Florida. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported that the 22-year-old, identified as Samuel Oche from Daytona Beach, drowned after disappearing beneath the water’s surface.

The distressing event unfolded near French Landing at approximately 4:18 p.m. Witnesses, including Oche’s girlfriend, indicated that he began to struggle while attempting to swim about 50 feet offshore. In a desperate attempt to save him, his girlfriend and several bystanders bravely entered the water. Unfortunately, their efforts were thwarted by the river’s strong current, causing them to lose their grip on him.

Authorities, including agents from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Air One unit, quickly responded to the emergency call. Despite their prompt actions, it was the Volusia Sheriff’s Office’s dive team that ultimately recovered Oche’s body later that evening, around 8 p.m.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the inherent risks associated with water activities, reminding us of the importance of safety precautions while enjoying Florida’s natural waterways.

Agents with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as Air One, responded to help with the search, deputies say.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office’s dive team recovered the victim around 8 p.m. Saturday. He was then identified as Samuel Oche of Daytona Beach.
