CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Residents of Coles County are feeling grateful after a tree toppled onto a home, creating a hole in the roof. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon near N. Sixth Street and Vine Avenue.

While two people and a dog were inside, fortunately, no injuries were reported. The homeowners believe a lightning strike caused the accident, though WCIA has not yet substantiated this with officials.

Neighbors have been working to help clean up the mess ever since, and said their efforts speak to the sense of community in Charleston.

“My husband used our large excursion truck to move the tree off the house for the homeowners,” explained neighbor Andrea Wiley. “We had about four or five people here with chainsaws helping to cut it up and remove everything from the house to prevent further damage, but there is already considerable damage.”

The homeowners said the city inspector will be by on Monday to look at the damage.
