VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol have impounded a pickup truck following a tragic incident where the vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian in Volusia County.

The accident happened at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday along State Road 40, also known as West Granada Boulevard, near the intersection with Booth Road, as reported by troopers.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol’s accident report, the driver, a 44-year-old man from Daytona Beach, was operating a 2021 Ford F-550 traveling eastward on S.R. 40. Simultaneously, a 32-year-old pedestrian from Ormond Beach was heading west on the eastbound paved shoulder.

The report indicates the driver veered from his lane onto the shoulder, resulting in the Ford colliding with the Ormond Beach pedestrian. Following the collision, the driver briefly paused at a nearby parking lot.

Sadly, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as confirmed by the troopers.

Subsequently, investigators contacted the driver, who recounted that he left the scene, mistakenly thinking he had hit an animal. The vehicle has since been seized as evidence, as per the report.

FHP is still investigating. There was no word at the time of this writing of any charges pending against the driver.

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
