President Trump announced on Friday that the Republican Party plans to organize a convention for the 2026 midterm elections as they aim to preserve their slim majority in Congress.
National party conventions generally only take place in presidential election years.
“The Republican Party is eager to host a Convention for the 2026 Midterm Election. We will conduct it at the highest levels, ensuring it is both enjoyable and highly productive,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
Some Democrats were also weighing holding a convention ahead of the midterm elections, Axios reported late last month.
Both Republicans and Democrats are increasingly locked in a battle over congressional redistricting, a critical factor that could decide which party gains control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
If the congressional majority is lost, it could impede Trump’s ability to advance his legislative goals. Currently, the Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate against the Democrats’ 47, while in the House, they have a 219-213 majority.
