ANGLETON, Texas (AP) — Two children lost their lives and two others were critically harmed in a shooting early Saturday near Angleton, a suburb of Houston, Texas, officials reported.

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office announced in a Facebook post that deputies responded to the shooting incident, discovering two children, aged 13 and 4, deceased due to gunfire. Two additional children, aged 8 and 9, were airlifted to a hospital where they remained in critical condition.

“Thankfully, the two injured children are now stable,” Madison Polston, the sheriff’s public affairs officer, conveyed in an email on Saturday.

A woman has been arrested in connection with the shooting, Polston said. Investigators were working to verify how the woman and children are related.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Authorities had yet to provide further information regarding the location of the shooting or the events leading up to it. However, Polston mentioned that her department aimed to release more details by Saturday evening.

“As details are still unfolding, the loss of two children in this way is tragic,” the sheriff’s office expressed in the Facebook post. “Our thoughts are with the family and everyone impacted as we strive to learn more about this devastating event.”

Angleton, a city with approximately 19,500 residents, serves as the county seat of Brazoria County. It is situated roughly 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Houston and forms part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan region.
