MARION COUNTY, Fla. – The driver and passenger of an SUV involved in an accident on Interstate 75 near Ocala were pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident took place at approximately 9:35 p.m. when the SUV was heading north on I-75 in the right lane, near mile marker 341, just north of County Road 484, according to troopers.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, but it appears the driver lost control, causing the SUV to veer off the road to the right, move onto the east grass shoulder, and collide with the concrete base of a light pole, based on an FHP crash report.
The SUV became fully engulfed in flames and Marion County Fire Rescue later pronounced its two occupants dead at the scene of the crash, the report states.
Positive identification for the driver and passenger — described in the report as female and male, respectively — is pending FHP’s investigation, troopers said.
