CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The sight of new apartment complexes emerging near the University of Illinois is a familiar one; however, the latest development is being proposed in a less traditional area on campus.

Research Park has set its sights on creating residential spaces close to First Street and Windsor Road. Though the concept has been around for several years, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Planners said the housing project is being designed for U of I staff within Research Park, staff at Carle and for graduate students.

“We’re aware that individuals work here and engage in some recreational activities, but we aim to introduce a residential aspect,” explained Laura Bleill, Director of External Engagement for Research Park. “We possess sufficient land to achieve this, and our plans were sanctioned by the Board of Trustees back in 2018.”

Research Park is in conversations with a potential developer, but nothing has been signed. There’s no estimate on how soon construction could start.
