URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Urbana paid tribute to Fire Battalion Chief Trent Short as he wrapped up 26 years of dedicated service. In recognition, Mayor DeShawn Williams declared Saturday to be Trent Short Day in the city.

Short spent nearly 30 years advancing through every position except the top role, following in his father’s legacy. His retirement ends an era of 45 consecutive years with his family serving in the fire department.

Short was also the Union President for 10 years, and officials said his legacy will leave a lasting impact on the department.

“Thanks to his efforts, the department is stronger now,” Fire Chief Demond Dade remarked. “[Short] pioneered significant changes in how the city and department collaborate, which continues to benefit both firefighters and the community we vowed to protect.”

Short was presented with his helmet, axe and more as his family, fellow firefighters and city officials wished him the best in retirement.
