Swift Response: Urbana Firefighters Successfully Contain Blaze at University of Illinois Residence Hall

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — On Friday, the Urbana Fire Department efficiently tackled a blaze at a residence hall on the University of Illinois campus, bringing it under control within approximately 20 minutes.

The incident began around 2:38 p.m. on October 24, when Urbana Fire crews, having just finished a previous call, were dispatched to the Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall at 1005 S. Lincoln Avenue. Initially responding to a fire alarm activation, firefighters were alerted by METCAD and U of I Dispatch that multiple fire alarms were being triggered throughout the building, suggesting a more serious situation than a typical false alarm, according to Urbana Fire officials.

Urbana Engine 253 was the first to arrive at the scene, where firefighters promptly entered the building to assess the situation. They encountered smoke on the second floor, along with evidence of active water flow and visible flames. This prompted the shift commander to escalate the situation to a working fire status, summoning additional resources to help manage the emergency.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the firefighters, the fire was quickly located and extinguished. Meanwhile, other crews diligently searched the building to ensure it was free of occupants, facilitating a safe and efficient operation. The fire was successfully brought under control within 20 minutes of their arrival.

In total, about 20 firefighters from Urbana responded to the incident. The fire was confined to its initial location, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Urbana Fire Department’s Investigation Team is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time.
