URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — On Sunday, a park in Champaign County was alive with joy as people and their pets came together for a special tailgate and costume party dedicated to dogs.

The gathering was put together by a group of friends known as the “Urbana Pack,” who share a love for both their companionship and their pets.

They say the dog park, and events like this, provide an essential way to connect with people.

“These days, when you’re out among people, they are often on their phones, not interacting. But at a dog park with friendly folks, there are no phones; instead, there’s conversation and connection. We’ve formed friendships and spend time together beyond the dog park. Creating this kind of community within our larger community is really important,” said Jodie Ellis, one of the event’s co-organizers.

She added that it was their first time doing this at Urbana’s Dog Park, but are hoping it becomes an annual tradition.
