Urbana Police arrest man suspected of Tuesday home invasion

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Police Department apprehended a man after he reportedly gained entry into a victim’s house by posing as a maintenance worker and then attempted theft.

Officers responded to the area of South Cottage Grove Avenue and East Burkwood Drive around 2:10 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of a home invasion.

During their investigation, they discovered that 60-year-old Michael A. Willis claimed he was a maintenance worker to enter the home and subsequently used physical force trying to steal money from the victim. The victim managed to push Willis away and contacted the police.

Officers began to search the area and found Willis about an hour later. He was taken into custody without incident.

The officers are now emphasizing the importance of being vigilant when allowing individuals into your residence who are not familiar to you. The police department recommended confirming a person’s identity through official means before granting them access.

No further details are being released at this time, police said. They also added that all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

If anyone has further information, they are urged to call the police at 217-384-2320. For anonymous tips, you can contact Crime Stoppers by dialing 217-373-8477, visiting their website, or using the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
