BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A local veteran is set to move into a specially designed home that far surpasses ADA standards, featuring over 40 custom adaptations to suit his needs.

Army Specialist Christopher Brooks, who sustained severe injuries during his service in Iraq, expressed that his new residence from the organization Homes For Our Troops will significantly aid in restoring his autonomy.

“There are days when I rely on a wheelchair,” Brooks explained. “The home’s open floor plan, along with wider hallways and doorways, will allow me to navigate with ease, even on tough days. I’ll be able to function fully independently, which is immensely beneficial to me.”

Brooks also anticipates that this new home will have lasting advantages for his family.

“Being able to support my parents when they need help is important to me,” he stated. “This home will accommodate us all, ensuring I can assist them when the time comes.”

Beyond providing homes, Homes For Our Troops continues to engage veterans by offering opportunities for them to participate in community activities and explore new experiences.

Brooks was invited to a veterans’ benefit golf tournament in Kentucky, which led him to discover a new hobby that he now enjoys with his son.

“Through [Homes For Our Veterans], I found, through my own recovery, and through my own efforts to be as mobile as possible, it actually helped me learn that I can play golf a little bit.”

Brooks said in his Community Kick-Off rally on Saturday that it was a “no-brainer” to apply for his new home.
